Gregory Jacobs, known as Digital Underground rapper, Shock G died yesterday in a Tampa Hotel Room. He was 57. According to the Sheriff’s report, Shock G was found dead at the Vista Inn & Suites hotel with no signs of trauma. His father told TMZ that an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Digital Underground member, Chopmaster J confirmed Shock G’s death in an Instagram post saying, “34 years ago almost to the day we had a wild idea we can be a hip hop band and take on the world through it all the dream became a reality and the reality became a nightmare for some. And now he’s awaken from the fame long live shock G Aka Humpty Hump and Rest in Peace my Brotha Greg Jacobs!!!”
As news spread of his death, tributes poured in from the Entertainment world and hip-hop community. DJ/Producer, Questlove, Public Enemy, Sheila E, Viola Davis, Ice Cube and more paid tribute to the legendary rapper on social media.
Shock G was a well-known rap artist and producer. He produced songs for Bobby Grown, Prince, KRS-One, and Dr. Dre in addition to performing. Digital Underground enjoyed a string of hits in the 1990s with songs like “The Humpty Dance”, “Doowutchyalike”, “Freaks of the Industry” and “Same Song”. It was on “Same Song” that the world was introduced to Tupac Shakur as a rap artist.
The hip-hop community has been rocked with bad news lately. Just earlier this week, former Bad Boy rapper, Black Rob died at 52 after numerous health challenges and Ruff Ryders Rapper, DMX passed away earlier this month from a heart attack after a drug overdose.
